Bamboo Shrimp Care

Tank Parameters Required:

  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • gH: 6–15 (moderately soft to slightly hard water)

  • kH: 1–2 (low carbonate hardness)

  • TDS: 100–350 (varied dissolved solids)

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

Behavior and Temperament:

Bamboo Shrimp are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them ideal tankmates for community setups. They are social creatures and thrive in groups of 4–5 or more. They tend to gather near water currents, where they can easily filter-feed.

Diet and Feeding:

Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders, using their fan-like appendages to catch microscopic particles, such as algae, phytoplankton, and detritus, from the water column. To ensure they have enough to eat:

  • Provide finely powdered foods like spirulina or shrimp-specific blends.

  • Target feed using a pipette if the tank has minimal flow or low food availability.

Pro Tip: Place them near the output of a filter or powerhead where water flow is strongest—they'll naturally position themselves here to feed.

Tank Setup:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons for small groups.

  • Provide a strong water flow using filters or powerheads to replicate their natural environment.

  • Decorate with driftwood, rocks, and live plants to create hiding spots and climbing areas.

  • Ensure clean, stable water conditions, as Bamboo Shrimp are sensitive to poor water quality.

Breeding:

Breeding Bamboo Shrimp in captivity is challenging due to their unique life cycle. Larvae require brackish water to develop into juvenile shrimp, which is difficult to replicate in a home aquarium.

Difficulty:

Moderate – While generally hardy, they require stable water parameters and consistent food availability to thrive.

  • Bamboo Shrimp are fascinating to watch, especially as they extend their fan-like hands to filter food from the water. They’ll often perch on rocks or driftwood in areas of strong flow.

  • They’re highly social and exhibit unique group behaviors, such as “lining up” in feeding areas to maximize their efficiency.

  • These shrimp can slightly change color based on mood, health, or environment, ranging from reddish-brown to greenish hues.
